Sea Song
About the Poem
Poet: Unknown What it is about: A child finds a BEAUTIFUL SHELL on the seashore. When she holds it to her ear, she hears the SEA 'singing' inside! It is a poem about WONDER and the MAGIC of nature.
The Poem
I found a shell upon the sand,
I held it to my ear.
I heard a song, so soft and grand,
As if the sea were near.
It sang of waves and salty spray,
Of ships upon the sea,
Of fishes swimming far away,
And all that's wild and free.
I'll keep it safe upon my shelf,
This treasure from the deep,
And when I hold it to my ear,
The songs of ocean leap.
Understanding the Poem
What is a Shell?
A SEASHELL is the hard, empty covering of a sea creature (like a snail or clam). After the creature leaves, the shell is left behind.
The Magic of the Shell
When you hold a shell to your ear, you hear a SOUND that sounds like the OCEAN! This is because the shell CATCHES and ECHOES sounds from the room around you, mixed with the sound of BLOOD flowing in your ear!
What Does the Child Imagine?
| Sound | Imagination |
|---|---|
| Whoosh... whoosh... | WAVES on the shore |
| Gentle hum | SALTY SPRAY in the wind |
| Distant murmur | SHIPS on the sea |
| Soft whisper | FISHES swimming far away |
| Open, free sound | All that is WILD and FREE |
The Life of a Shell

|---|---|---|
| Conch | Spiral, large | White/pink |
