A Little Fish Story

About the Story

What it is about: There was a LITTLE FISH who thought the world was ONLY WATER. One day, he jumps out of the water and DISCOVERS a whole new world — the SKY, the LAND, the TREES, and BIRDS!

The Story

Once upon a time, there was a LITTLE FISH. He lived in a POND with his family and friends.

The little fish thought he knew EVERYTHING about the world.

'This is the world,' he said, looking at the water. 'It is all WATER. There is nothing else.'

His FRIENDS laughed at him. 'You are SILLY!' they said. 'The world is much BIGGER than this pond!'

'Impossible!' said the little fish. 'How can anything be BIGGER than all this water?'

One day, the little fish was swimming NEAR the surface. He saw something STRANGE. Bright sparkling colours ABOVE the water.

What could it be? He was CURIOUS. With a big FLIP of his tail, he JUMPED out of the water!

And then — WOW! He saw a VAST blue sky, GREEN trees, colourful BIRDS flying, and PEOPLE walking on land!

'Oh!' gasped the little fish. 'There is SO MUCH MORE to the world! I was so WRONG!'

He plopped BACK into the water and swam straight to his friends.

'You were RIGHT!' he said. 'The world is ENORMOUS! There is sky and land and trees and birds and so many things I never knew!'

The little fish never said 'the world is only water' again. He had LEARNED something important: The world is FULL of wonders, and we have SO MUCH more to discover!

What We Can Learn

1. Stay Curious

The little fish was CURIOUS, and curiosity led him to DISCOVERY. Asking questions and exploring is how we LEARN!

2. The World is Bigger Than We Think

We might think we know EVERYTHING, but there is ALWAYS more to discover. The world is FULL of wonders.

3. Listen to Others

The other fish TRIED to tell the little fish the truth. Sometimes, we should LISTEN to people who have more experience.

4. It's OK to Be Wrong

The little fish was WRONG, and that is OK! He LEARNED and GREW from the experience. Being wrong can be a STEP toward learning.

Common Mistakes

  1. 'Fish can live outside water.' — No! Fish need WATER to breathe. They breathe through GILLS, not lungs. The little fish only JUMPED out briefly.

  2. 'The little fish was right about the world.' — No! He was WRONG. The world has water, land, sky, and many other things.

  3. 'The pond is the biggest thing in the world.' — No! There are rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans that are MUCH bigger than a pond.

  4. 'Learning stops when you grow up.' — No! Learning NEVER stops. There is ALWAYS something new to discover, at ANY age!
