About UPSC CSE
The Civil Services Examination is the route into the IAS, IPS, IFS and the other All-India and Central Group A and B services. It runs in three stages — Preliminary, Mains and the Personality Test — of which the Preliminary examination is a screening filter.
Prelims consists of two objective papers taken on the same day, each sectionally locked to 120 minutes. General Studies Paper I has 100 questions for 200 marks and is the only paper whose score decides the Prelims cut-off. CSAT (General Studies Paper II) has 80 questions for 200 marks and is purely qualifying at 33%.
Prelims marks do not carry forward. A candidate who clears at the margin and one who clears comfortably enter Mains on identical terms — but a single mark short ends the attempt for that year.
What a good score unlocks
