About SSC CGL

SSC CGL is the largest graduate-entry recruitment examination in India, filling Group B and Group C posts across ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India. Assistant Section Officer, Income Tax Inspector, Excise Inspector, Assistant Audit Officer and Sub-Inspector are among the most sought-after posts.

Selection runs through Tier 1 and Tier 2, with a skill test or document verification depending on the post. Tier 1 is a 60-minute screening paper of 100 questions across four sections — Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension — carrying 25 questions and 50 marks each.

The 2026 cycle introduces the most significant change to this paper in years: Tier 1 is now sectionally time-locked, with a fixed 15 minutes for each of the four sections. Time saved in a strong section can no longer be spent on a weak one, and when a section's timer expires the screen advances and cannot be revisited.

What a good score unlocks

• A CGL appointment leads to Group B (gazetted and non-gazetted) and Group C posts across the CBDT, CBIC, CAG, Ministry of External Affairs, Central Secretariat Service and numerous other departments.
• Post allocation depends on your rank, your stated preferences and the vacancies notified that year, so two candidates with similar scores can end up in very different departments.
