About UGC NET / JRF
UGC NET determines eligibility for Assistant Professor posts in Indian universities and colleges, for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and for admission to PhD programmes. A single examination now serves all three purposes.
The test has two papers taken in one continuous three-hour session with no break. Paper 1 (50 questions, 100 marks) is common to all candidates and covers teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension and general awareness. Paper 2 (100 questions, 200 marks) is subject-specific, chosen from a long list of subjects.
There is no negative marking in either paper, which makes the attempt strategy unusually straightforward: every question should be answered.
What a good score unlocks
- Qualifying for Assistant Professor confers eligibility to apply for teaching posts in universities and colleges; qualifying for JRF additionally carries a research fellowship with a monthly stipend.
- The JRF cut-off is substantially higher than the Assistant Professor cut-off, and JRF carries an age limit that the Assistant Professor category does not.
