About NEET UG
NEET-UG is the single national entrance test for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS and other AYUSH courses, B.V.Sc & A.H. and allied medical programmes across India, conducted by the National Testing Agency. It is the most competitive undergraduate examination in the country, with applicants well into the lakhs every cycle competing for a far smaller number of government seats.
The paper draws entirely from the Class 11 and 12 syllabi in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology), with Biology carrying the largest share of questions and marks. A single national merit list governs admission to almost every medical college — government and private, through the All-India and state quotas — which is why even small differences in score translate into large swings in rank.
Success depends on near-perfect command of NCERT, accuracy under negative marking, and the stamina to stay precise across a long, single-sitting paper. Unlike a multi-shift computer test, NEET is one common pen-and-paper exam, so there is no shift normalisation — your raw score is your score.
What a good score unlocks
- A NEET rank, through MCC (All-India Quota) and state counselling, governs admission to government and private MBBS and BDS seats, AYUSH colleges, veterinary programmes and several allied-health and nursing courses.
- It is also the qualifying gate for AIIMS and JIPMER seats (now folded into NEET) and for candidates seeking to study medicine abroad who need an Indian eligibility certificate.
