About NDA
The NDA & NA Examination is the route into the National Defence Academy for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings, and into the Indian Naval Academy. It is conducted by UPSC twice a year and is open to unmarried candidates who have completed or are appearing in Class 12.
The written examination has two papers taken on the same day: Mathematics (120 questions, 300 marks, 150 minutes) and the General Ability Test (150 questions, 600 marks, 150 minutes). The GAT is itself split into English and General Knowledge, with General Knowledge carrying the larger share.
Clearing the written stage leads to the SSB interview, a five-day assessment of officer-like qualities that carries 900 marks — equal to the entire written examination. Written performance alone decides nothing.
What a good score unlocks
- Successful candidates join the NDA at Khadakwasla for three years of training followed by service-specific training, or the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala for the 4-year B.Tech cadet entry.
- The examination leads to a permanent commission as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces.
