About JEE Main
JEE Main is India's largest engineering entrance examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) as the gateway to the country's premier technology institutes. A strong score opens admission — through JoSAA/CSAB counselling — to the 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and the centrally-funded Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), and the top performers qualify for JEE Advanced, the sole route into the 23 IITs.
The exam is held in two sessions each year (typically January and April). A candidate may appear in either or both; when both are attempted, the better of the two normalised NTA scores is used for ranking, which means a weak first attempt can be fully recovered in the second. JEE Main has three papers — Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) — and you register only for the ones relevant to your goal.
Paper 1 tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics through objective and numerical-answer questions. It rewards conceptual clarity and accurate, time-bound problem-solving far more than rote learning — with negative marking in play, knowing when not to attempt a question matters as much as solving one. Because the test runs across multiple shifts, raw marks are converted to a percentile (the NTA score) that is normalised across sessions to keep ranking fair.
What a good score unlocks
- A good JEE Main rank feeds the centralised JoSAA counselling that allots seats across roughly 120 institutes — the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — spanning every branch from Computer Science and Electronics to Mechanical, Civil and emerging fields like AI & Data Science.
- The top candidates (historically the leading ~2.5 lakh rank-holders) become eligible to register for JEE Advanced and compete for the IITs. Beyond government institutes, many private and state universities also use the JEE Main score for admission, so a single exam unlocks a very wide set of options.
