About IBPS Clerk
IBPS Clerk is the Common Recruitment Process for the clerical cadre of the participating public-sector banks — the single-window operators who form the customer-facing backbone of a branch. One application and merit list feeds clerical vacancies across these banks, and unlike the officer exam there is no interview, so your written performance alone decides selection.
There are two stages: a qualifying Preliminary examination and a Main examination that determines the final merit. The Prelims screens language and aptitude under tight sectional timing; the Mains broadens into General/Financial Awareness, a combined Reasoning & Computer Aptitude paper and Quantitative Aptitude, testing the practical skills a clerk uses daily.
Because there is no interview and Prelims is only qualifying, the Mains score is everything — and with sectional timing throughout, the exam rewards consistent accuracy across all subjects rather than brilliance in one. State-wise vacancies also mean local-language proficiency is part of eligibility for the state you apply to.
What a good score unlocks
- A cleared IBPS Clerk is appointed to the clerical cadre and handles day-to-day branch operations — cash, customer service, account maintenance and back-office work — with a stable pay-scale set under the bipartite settlement.
- The role is a strong entry point into public-sector banking, with internal promotion channels to the officer cadre over time and postings within the state you are recruited for.
