Have you ever wondered what you might see if the invisible world around you became visible?

Almost everything would turn out to be crowded. A single drop of pond water would stop being clear and become a container of moving creatures — Amoeba changing shape, Paramecium swimming past, green algae drifting. A spoonful of garden soil stirred in water would show branched fungal threads and bacteria of every shape: spherical, rod-like, comma-shaped, spiral.
Your own body would look different too. The inside of your cheek would resolve into flat polygonal cells fitted together like paving. Your gut would be full of bacteria that help you digest food. A slice of onion would look like a brick wall.
And surfaces you think of as clean would not be. Microorganisms live in water, soil, air, on the leaves, stems and roots of plants, and even in hot springs and snowfields.
Why we cannot see any of it. The human eye can only see objects above a certain size. What changed things was the lens — a curved piece of glass shaped like a lentil seed, thick in the middle and thin at the edge, which is where the word lens comes from.
