You've decided to study abroad. Now comes the first hurdle: proving you can speak English. But which test is right for you?
1. IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- Format: Paper-based or Computer-based. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a human.
- Best For: UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe. It is the most widely accepted test globally.
- Difficulty: Moderate. The human element in speaking can be a pro or a con depending on your confidence.
2. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- Format: 100% Computer-based. You speak into a microphone.
- Best For: USA. American universities prefer TOEFL as it tests academic English (e.g., listening to a lecture).
- Difficulty: Harder than IELTS. The reading passages are dense and academic.
3. PTE (Pearson Test of English)
- Format: AI-scored. A computer grades your essay and speech.
- Best For: Australia and New Zealand. Also accepted by many UK/US unis now.
- The "Hack": Since an AI grades you, you can learn specific templates and keywords to score high. It is considered the "easiest" to score 90/90.
4. Duolingo English Test (DET)
The new kid on the block. It's cheap ($59), fast (1 hour), and you can take it from home. Accepted by 4000+ institutions, but check if your specific college accepts it.
Recommendation: If you are targeting the US, take TOEFL. For Canada/UK, IELTS is safer. If you struggle with English and need a quick score for Australia, go for PTE.
